Eat Local

At the intersection of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Highway 181 in Pineola sits a little garage-turned-deli that has delighted the hearts and filled the tummies of hungry travelers for two decades. Christa’s Country Corner serves up delicious meals, sandwiches, and ice cream, along with a general store reminiscent of yesteryear, offering a selection of gifts, typical convenience-store offerings, and Carrhart clothing.

When you walk in, one of the friendly ladies working will introduce you to the system. Take a paper menu, circle your selection (a big variety of sandwich fixin’s on one side, daily specials on the other), and they will make it fresh for you. The sandwiches are so good that I’ve never ventured into the realm of daily specials! Hands down, the best bread of the multiple selections is the homemade yeast rolls. These things are good enough to make a meal of on their own!

Make sure you save room for one of the homemade desserts. These vary by the day but are universally delicious. I speak from experience when I say that a certain mall based cinnamon-bun chain has absolutely nothing on Christa’s, and I hear the cobblers are outstanding as well. If baked treats aren’t your speed, get a scoop or two of ice cream!

Christa’s is perfectly located just feet from the Blue Ridge Parkway MP 312, making it an excellent pit stop. You can’t miss the building- it’s the only one in the area with a monster truck sitting right outside! In the winter, Christa’s husband Sam uses the truck to take visitors to the fields in their Christmas tree farm, Sam’s Nursery, to choose & cut a tree. The restaurant is just a short drive away from Beacon Heights, Flat Rock, Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, and Wiseman’s View, so it’s a great place to refuel after a fun day of hiking. Do yourself and your belly a favor and stop in to visit Christa’s on your next venture to the area!
