Deck Hill Road is a great High Country back road. It’s not really a “get there faster” road, but rather a prettier route leading to more ways to wind around up here.
Deck Hill branches up the hill off Greenway Road and curves up and around to the side of Appalachian Ski Mountain. It’s just two miles long, but it’s a neat little route.
There are a couple sharp curves at the Greenway Road end, then the road just goes on up to a 4-way intersection. Running perpendicular is Payne Branch Road- another fun road to wind around on!- and directly across the intersection is Flat Top Road, leading into the residential area above Appalachian Ski Mountain. If you turn left onto Payne Branch Road and go down the hill, you’ll wind up at Highway 321 just outside Boone in about 2 miles. Turn right on Payne Branch and the road will turn to gravel for a bit, and you’ll come out on Winkler’s Creek Road. Go straight on Flat Top Road, and you’ll pass a ski lift at the top of one of App Ski’s runs, not to mention going past some very nice homes before coming out on the exit ramp to the Blue Ridge Parkway from Highway 321S.
