In addition to being passionate about the Boone/Blowing Rock area, I’m also crazy about photography. Not for nothin’ is one of my Twitter handles “shutterbughiker”! And my all-time favorite subject to shoot? Why, sunsets, of course. No two sunsets are ever alike, no matter where you go. And of course there are some fantastic places up here to shoot them. Today I’m going to show you two of my favorites. I know, a real photographer should never give away their secret spots, but I can’t help wanting everyone to experience the same joy I get when I see a sunset.
Hotspot #1 is very well-known. In fact, there’s a billboard (or at least there used to be) on Hwy. 321 advertising the fact. It’s Canyon’s Restaurant, overlooking the John’s River Gorge in Blowing Rock. Due to its south-westward face, I’ve caught many a spectacular sunset from the parking lot. Here’s my latest one, taken in January. It’s the same sunset, and the shots were about 10 minutes apart.
Hotspot #2 is fairly close to Canyon’s, but it faces a different directions. Overlooking the Yadkin valley gorge, Raven Rocks Overlook on the Parkway (right around MP 291, just about .25 miles north of the popular Thunder Hill overlook) has a perfect sunset view. I caught great sunsets in October- the first shot- and last weekend (February, the second shot) there.
There are other places to get sunset shots, of course, but that’s a great start. Enjoy your sunset chasing! You’ll discover it’s even more addictive in these mountains than it could ever be in the flatlands or at the beach!
