When you need to get from the south end of Blowing Rock all the way to the Hwy 421 area in a hurry, State Farm Road is the way to go. It bypasses the stoplights on the main drag through Boone, and on a busy day, can get you from Point A to Point B in about half the time.
It runs from Highway 105 Extension across from the First Citizen’s Bank to Deerfield Road at Watauga Medical Center. There are just two stoplights in the 1.2 mile stretch of two-lane road. Be careful tootling along State Farm Rd, though- it’s a 35mph street, and the good Boone PD patrolmen don’t really take too well to speeders.
At the hospital end, you can turn left onto Deerfield Road to get to Samaritan’s Purse, about 2 miles on down, or you can turn right onto Deerfield Rd, go through one light, and come out next to CVS Pharmacy at the intersection with Hwy. 321 at the south side of Boone. At the other end, you can turn left on Hwy 105 Ext. and go down the hill to the big 4-way intersection with Hwys 321 & 105 (where the 2-story Wendy’s is), or you can turn right and get to the T-intersection with Highway 421.
Here’s a screenshot map of the route, marked in purple. I tried not to obliterate the road names, but I guess it’s painfully obvious that my talent lies in writing and photography, not in computer art.
